Building Business Resilience

Challenging economic times, like those we’re in at the moment, can really put your business to the test. It goes without saying that a resilient business, with robust processes, will survive longer than one that’s fragile and vulnerable.

Here are some steps you can take to make your business stronger.

Identify your risks. What are the biggest threats to your business? Once you know your risks, you can start to develop plans to mitigate them.

Build a strong financial foundation. This means having enough cash on hand to weather any storms. It also means having a good credit score and access to finance.

Have a contingency plan. What will you do if your business is disrupted by a fire, a cyberattack, or other event? Having a plan in place will help you recover quickly.

Invest in your employees. Your employees are your most valuable asset. Make sure they are trained and equipped to do their jobs.

Be flexible and adaptable. The world is constantly changing, so your business needs to be able to change with it. Be willing to experiment and try new things.

Build relationships with your customers and suppliers. Strong relationships will pay dividends if you encounter tough times.

Stay positive and optimistic. A positive attitude can go a long way in helping you overcome challenges.

The British Business Bank has recently released an excellent guide to building business resilience. The guide goes into more detail on some of these tips and more. You can download a copy here and we highly recommend checking it out.

Of course, managing cash flow is a central pillar of your business’s resilience. As a small company, you can be quickly impacted by a lack of cash, which can affect your ability to pay bills, meet payroll, purchase stock, or invest in growth.

Left unchecked, this can rapidly turn into insolvency, which could mean you are trading illegally.

Creating a cash flow forecast and a budget used to involve an accountant, or hours and hours hunched over outstanding invoices and spreadsheets. Now, with CaFE plugged into your accounting software, you can literally create your own forecasts at a touch of a button.

As importantly, CaFE will also give you advance warning of when you are likely to be short of cash, along with the causes, so you can take positive action before it is too late.

By incorporating CaFE into your management strategy, you can build a business that is ready to weather any storm!
